Biography
Elizabeth Nelson,has amassed particular proficiency
in providing legal counsel and litigation support in the areas of
Tax Controversy, Tax Audits, International Tax and Tax and Estate
Planning. Recent Tax Controversy accomplishments include: IRS $1.2
million dollar penalty abatement and trust fund abatement for a
large nonprofit corporation; IRS $1.6 million dollar penalty abatement
re W-2 filing issues for a multi-million dollar corporation; IRS
$1.5 million active/passive Tax Court tax reduction for LA entertainment
corporation; California State Board of Equalization (“SBOE”)
penalty abatement for employment tax issues, as well as positive
outcomes for clients within the United States Tax Court, the California
SBOE, and all levels of the IRS and California FTB from audit to
appeals to collection. Ms. Nelson was also tax consulting manager
for famed motion picture production/animation company.
Professional Education: Ms. Nelson graduated from the University
of San Diego School of Law, cum laude, in 1986 and received her
Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University School of Law,
in 1997. Ms. Nelson clerked for the United States Tax Court, 1986-1987
term, for the Honorable Larry L. Nameroff, and was a Graduate Assistant
for the Honorable Theodore J. Tannenwald, during her last semester
of law school.
Publications & Lectures: Ms. Nelson is an Adjunct Professor
for Chapman University School of Law, LL.M. Tax Program. During
Chapman’s Fall Term 2009, Ms. Nelson developed and organized
the 2009 Tax Professionals Panel, which incorporated presentations
from the IRS Appeals Office, the California Franchise Tax Board
Criminal Division, the U.S. Attorneys Office, Tax Criminal Division
and the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. Prior to moving to Los Angeles,
Ms. Nelson was an Adjunct Professor in Taxation for the University
of California Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara College of Law, and
was associated with a local estate and tax planning firm.
While at the United States Tax Court, Ms. Nelson help research and
draft several published opinions, one of which changed United States
tax law. Ms. Nelson has presented numerous lectures on Exempt Organizations
and Planned Giving and developed several planned giving campaigns
for various large exempt organizations. Ms. Nelson has written numerous
articles which have been published in the Santa Barbara Women Lawyers
and the Women Lawyers of Ventura County.
Associations: Ms. Nelson was secretary of the Tax Section of the
Beverly Hills Bar Association, was a past vice president of the
Women Lawyers of Ventura County and member of the Santa Barbara
Women Lawyers. Ms. Nelson is married. She and her husband raise
toy schnauzers.
